The East Africa Regional Lesser Flamingo Network has attempted to share action plans and information about conservation status with relevant countries. The Kenya Wildlife Service, which mainly undertakes wildlife conservation activities, is not prepared for establishing transboundary conservation actions for migratory birds. Who would take up this task, however, is not yet clear. However, good cooperation and institutional synergy between Kenya and Tanzania are essential for the success of this plan. In 2008, the Kenya National Single Species Action Plan for the Conservation of the Lesser Flamingo began to effectively conserve the lesser flamingoes in Kenya. However, for sustainability purposes, this paper suggests that, states need to achieve economic development goals in a sustainable ways which takes into account economic, social and environmental aspects for the current and future generation.Įvery year, about 850,000 flamingoes migrate between Kenya's Lake Nakuru and Lake Natron in Tanzania. It concludes that, states are powerful and they could do harmful to the environment. The chapter uses the theories of state and power, politics of scale and distributional justice to explain the case. It has taken Lake Natron Soda Ash Project in Tanzania as a case study to show how a state could use its power for advocating for economic development while ignoring other environmental justices. This chapter strives to show the centrality of states in biodiversity conservation. Politics, self interest and corruption are some of the reasons named by various researchers that contribute into using power in wrong ways that brings cost to the environment and people. However, states stand better position to support for sustainable development if it uses their power in the interest of the economy, society and environment. The power vested on states, if not well used could lead to over-utilization or taking environmental resources for granted.
It is however worth noting that, every economic development happens in the expense of the environment.
All states around the world advocate for economic development as their primary objective.
